Cognitive and Academic Assessments @ Heyday

Cognitive testing

Why would I have a cognitive test?

  • To better understand lifelong patterns in attention, learning, or information processing.

  • To identify cognitive strengths and challenges in order to support work performance, career planning, or academic accommodations.

  • To receive clear, practical recommendations tailored to how you think, learn, and problem-solve.

Assessment structure:

  • An initial meeting with a the individual or parent to gather information about history leading to requesting an assessment including developmental history

  • One or two sessions are scheduled for 1-2 hours each to perform the standard cognitive testing.

  • Each assessment is scored and interpreted against standardises results.

  • A detailed assessment report of findings, with behaviour and educational recommendations.

  • A feedback session to discuss the assessment report and answer any remaining questions you have is scheduled.

Cognitive testing is a check to see if there are problems with an individual’s cognition. Cognition is a combination of processes in your brain. It is included in everything we do, from thinking, memory, language, hold multiple pieces of information in the mind at one time, and a personal ability to read situations and use their judgement.

Testing involves answering a series of questions or completing a simple task. The way in which you complete the test measures your mental functions, such as memory, and language.

All cognitive profiles tell a story of strengths and challenges. Cognitive assessments in children and adults will assist in the examination of a learning difficulty or disabilities, intellectual diffluences, or disabilities and intellectual giftedness.

ACADEMIC TESTING

Some testing, particularly in young people can be complimented by Academic testing which includes a WIAT.

When questions arise about reading, writing, or math skills, an academic achievement assessment can help clarify current abilities and identify areas of strength or difficulty. This type of testing is often used to better understand learning profiles, guide educational planning, or support accommodations.

These tests are also used to diagnose the characteristics of Specific Learning Disorders like:

  • Dyslexia

  • Dyscalculia

  • Dyspraxia

Academic achievement testing helps assess skills in reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics. This type of evaluation can be useful for understanding learning differences, academic challenges, or discrepancies between ability and achievement.

For young people, some diagnoses require confirmation by a Paediatrician.

There are some rebates available under item code 82000 - ONLY if referred by a Paediatrician or Psychiatrist for people under the age of 25 years old.
